Worsbrough Bridge Athletic's week of cup joy and upheaval

Few clubs in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division will have experienced a week quite like Worsbrough Bridge Athletic's. The Briggers beat Stocksbridge Park Steels on penalties in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup, with goalkeeper Owen Evans saving the decisive spot-kick in a 10-9 shootout after a 1-1 draw. Within a day, the club confirmed that manager Lee Mosby had resigned after nearly three years in charge, an announcement the chairman described as coming after "a long day" in which "the fog starts to lift". The statement thanked Mosby and his assistant Rhys for achievements including promotion to the NCEL Premier Division for the first time in the club's 44-year membership, while insisting "the objectives remain the same" as attention turned to a Friday night fixture against Campion.

It followed a setback on the pitch earlier in the week. Handsworth came from behind to beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic 2-1 at Olivers Mount, Mitch Dunne and Luke Mangham scoring the goals that continued the Ambers' unbeaten run. According to their own account, Handsworth conceded inside the first minute for the second time in three days before fighting back, with Dunne's finish levelling matters before Mangham struck the winner with eight minutes remaining.

It capped a congested schedule for Handsworth. Having drawn 2-2 at Retford United after falling two goals behind, thanks to goals from Owen Haigh and Alfie Dodsworth, the Ambers were then beaten 3-1 by Horbury Town in the League Cup, a game in which more than half the regular starting eleven were rested. Dodsworth's free-kick was the consolation in a match settled by two Jagger goals either side of a red card for Ben Harriott.

Campion continued to struggle in the same period, losing 2-1 at home to Retford United despite pulling a goal back through Corey Billy's header, a result that left the Bradford club with three defeats in a row and Lee Ashforth's side looking to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic as their next opponents.

Elsewhere in the cup competitions, Penistone Church were knocked out of the NCEL League Cup at Knaresborough Town, while in the league Church came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Pickering Town at the Simply Log Cabins Memorial Ground, Kieran Ryan and substitute Will Heath scoring the equalisers. Rossington Main extended their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions with a 2-2 draw at Parkgate, Adam Watson and Harry Wilson scoring twice from behind, having earlier beaten Route One Rovers 3-0 in the JCP Construction Cup with Ross Hannah reaching his 101st goal for the club. Thackley Association drew 1-1 at Albion Sports courtesy of a first goal for new signing Alfie King, having beaten Parkgate 4-0 in midweek thanks to a four-minute hat-trick from Luke Brooks.
