Walcountians keep unbeaten record as Shoreham lose manager in Southern Combination week

AFC Walcountians began the week as the only unbeaten side in Division One and ended the previous Saturday still that way. Goals from Joe Wornham, Theo Huey-Walker, James Porter and Charlie Moore, plus an own goal, gave them a 5-0 win over Mile Oak, a fifth clean sheet in eight games. Worthing United, who had lost their own unbeaten run at Reigate Priory, were preparing to host them in a meeting of first against third.

The week's sharper story was at Shoreham. A 2-0 defeat away to Guildford City came first, and the club's own account was candid: "We've not looked like scoring this afternoon." On Tuesday they lost 4-2 to Jarvis Brook in the Sussex Senior Cup, the fourth goal coming with the final kick after a last-minute equaliser. The club then confirmed that Connor Cox had left his role as first team manager by mutual agreement, thanking him for taking charge "during one of the most challenging period of the clubs most recent history". A further announcement on the position is promised. Jarvis Brook, who have now won seven in a row, return to Middle Road for a league fixture on Saturday.

The Guildford City win was shaped by captain Luke Mitchell, back from injury. According to the club's report he scored a first-half penalty but hit the woodwork four times, including both posts with one shot in the 81st minute. Wayne Grigg tucked in the rebound from Mitchell's header with the last action of the game.

Cup football filled midweek. Arundel drew 1-1 at Premier Division Seaford Town in the RUR Cup, Matt Storm heading them in front before Rio Quaye's 75th-minute penalty levelled it, and went out 5-4 on penalties. That followed a 5-2 defeat at Hailsham Town, who then beat Loxwood 2-1 in the same competition. Worthing United won 4-1 against Premier Division Lancing.

Joshua Adjei scored his first for the club since joining from Guildford City, and Daniel Cenzano reached 100 appearances. Saltdean United beat Infinity 4-2 in the Sussex cup to progress to a tie at Oakwood. Mile Oak re-signed Taylor Harding from Saltdean and added Kieran Mayele.
