Thirteen FA Cup replays leave National League North and South stretched

The FA Cup second qualifying round is where every National League North and South club enters, and this year it has left both divisions with a congested Tuesday. Thirteen replays were confirmed, and a striking number involve Step 2 sides who could not see off lower-league opposition first time.

AFC Telford United and Worksop Town produced the pick of the all-National League North ties, drawing 2-2 at the SEAH Stadium in front of 997. Matty Stenson and Louis Moult scored for the hosts, Liam Waldock's penalty and Chae Whitman-Brown's late finish for the Tigers, who now host the replay. AFC Telford United manager Kevin Wilkin was pleased with the return of Jordan Cranston but, according to the club, felt errors crept back in and cost his side.

Elsewhere the Step 3 and Step 4 sides did the damage. Weston-super-Mare were pegged back at home by Wimborne Town after Luke Skinner's early goal; Dorking Wanderers twice led at Southall and twice were caught, Glenn Morris saving a penalty along the way. Maidstone United conceded to Rob Strachan seven minutes from time at Cray Wanderers, Hampton & Richmond Borough saw four goals and two red cards in the last quarter of an hour against Crowborough Athletic, and Farnham Town, Braintree Town, Hemel Hempstead Town, Farnborough, Dagenham & Redbridge and Truro City all face second attempts. Tom Harrison's stoppage-time header at Merthyr Town spared the Tinners, whose wait for a cup win now stretches to 1,841 days.

There was more comfort for others. Dover Athletic came from behind twice to beat Folkestone Invicta 4-2 in front of 2,342 in the Kent derby, Jack Bates scoring twice. Salisbury marked Brian Dutton's 200th game in charge with a 4-1 win over Taunton Town. Spennymoor Town won 4-0 at Emley, Scarborough Athletic 2-0 at Dunston, and Morecambe beat Southport 2-0. Chorley needed Jack Sampson's retaken stoppage-time penalty at Warrington Rylands, having played the last eleven minutes a man short.

At Brackley Town, Gareth Dean returned to the dugout following Andy Whing's resignation and saw Fin Roberts settle a 1-0 win over AFC Portchester. Ebbsfleet United's 3-1 victory at Maidenhead United came days after the club announced Damian Irvine would step down as chief executive. Farnborough, meanwhile, confirmed they are seeking a sale or investment.
