Thetford lose top spot as Stowmarket fall to Walsham le Willows

The week's results were scattered across the Premier Division, but the Saturday of 3 October gave it a shape. Stowmarket Town lost 5-2 at home to Walsham Le Willows, a result the Willows described as a welcome win. Ely City's midweek preview of their trip to Thetford had described Stowmarket as 'then' top of the league, and that billing now reads differently.

Thetford Town had themselves been described by Ely as having just taken top spot. On Tuesday they beat Ely City 2-0 in front of 261 people at the Lomax Spiral Systems stadium. On Saturday, though, Great Yarmouth Town knocked them out of the Norfolk Senior Cup, winning 2-1 at The Wellesley. The Bloaters said two set pieces and two headers from man of the match Barnes sealed it, with Thetford scoring in injury time to make it close. Thetford Town had also won 4-0 at Walsham Le Willows earlier in the week, according to their highlights post.

The Lakenheath v Mildenhall fixture, billed by both clubs as El Baseco, went to Lakenheath, who won 2-1 at the Riverside. Lakenheath had called it a derby with 'huge implications for the league table', and they now head into a home game seeking a third league win in a row. For Mildenhall Town, joint manager Ben Mayhew was interviewed after the defeat.

At Dereham, the Magpies beat Brantham Athletic 3-1 for back-to-back wins, which Brantham called 'a dire day'. Brantham had lost 3-1 at home to Woodbridge Town on Tuesday. Dereham Town also announced that their inherited HMRC debt has been cleared in full, along with interest and penalties.

There were several draws. Haverhill Rovers drew 2-2 at March, Luke Lindsay equalising in added time, and Ipswich Wanderers drew 2-2 with Harleston Town, for whom Jake Reed took the man of the match award for a brace. Soham Town Rangers and Woodbridge Town also drew 2-2. Downham Town won 4-2 at Acle United, with Luke Gray scoring the fourth, and Wisbech Town won 4-2 at Cornard United. At Kirkley & Pakefield, Ely City won 5-2.

Away from the pitch, Harleston Town presented a cheque for £2,500 to East Anglia's Children's Hospices, raised at their FA Cup tie with Great Yarmouth Town in memory of Logan Collier, a Harleston youth player who died in May. Great Yarmouth matched the contribution by donating their share of the gate.
