New money at Bath City frames a week of change in Southern League

The biggest story to emerge from Step 3 this week had little to do with what happened on the pitch. Bath City confirmed the completion of their sale to a new investor group led by Executive Chair Andrew Stalbow, describing a seed round of over £6m aimed at pushing the club up the pyramid and building what the club called "Football League ready infrastructure". Outgoing Chair David McDonagh will keep a seat on the new board as the Supporters Society representative, and the takeover was marked with new board members and club ambassador Curt Smith greeting fans in Charlie's Bar before the visit of Chippenham Town, whom Bath beat 2-0 through goals from Donovan Wilson and Scott Wilson in the A4 derby.

On the pitch, Bromsgrove Sporting halted Bury Town's 100% start to the season with a second-half header from Ollie Harrison. Manager Tim Flowers praised his side's second-half football as "open, fast and fluent", while Bury boss Cole Skuse called it "a real game of two halves" and backed his side to bounce back. The win stretched Bromsgrove's unbeaten run to five matches and delivered a fourth successive clean sheet.

At the top of Premier South, Uxbridge thrashed Chichester City 5-0 at Honeycroft, with debutant Eddie Allsopp scoring on his first start and George Moore adding two more. The result kept Uxbridge unbeaten and top of the division heading into a trip to Berkhamsted.

Also in Premier South, Basingstoke Town drew 1-1 at Gloucester City, Miles Obodo cancelling out Ashley Hemmings' opener before Simon Grant repeatedly denied the hosts. Poole Town beat Havant & Waterlooville 1-0 through a Ryan Campbell header, while Wimborne Town made it seven games unbeaten by defeating Bracknell Town 2-0 with goals from Will Fletcher and Cam Sullivan, having also advanced past Portishead Town after extra time in the FA Cup.

In Premier Central, Leiston won for the first time at Banbury United, coming from behind through Kyle Callan-McFadden and Adam Mills, while Halesowen Town eased FA Cup and league concerns together, beating Leighton Town 4-2 to end a losing run. Hitchin Town earned their first win of the season with a 3-0 FA Cup replay victory over Biggleswade Town, but are still searching for their first league victory after a 1-1 draw with Stourbridge, sealed by a 90th-minute Taylor Rhiney penalty (0 wins, 4 draws, 3 losses in the league). Real Bedford, still unbeaten in the league, suffered a shock exit from the Bedfordshire County Cup, beaten 1-0 by Biggleswade FC.

In cup action, Needham Market progressed with a 3-1 win over Stanway Rovers. Meanwhile, in the league, Peterborough Sports won an entertaining 4-2 against Rushall Olympic, and Chertsey Town thumped Malvern Town 5-0 as the newly promoted side continue to find life at Step 3 unforgiving.
