New faces make their mark in the Midland Football League

Freddie Cockerell had been a Sporting Khalsa player for only a matter of hours when he scored the only goal of Saturday's derby against Darlaston Town. The club announced the forward's arrival from AFC Wolverhampton City as kick-off approached, noting that he had scored twice against them earlier in the season. On 28 minutes he beat his defender, cut inside and finished with an angled shot past Tom Carter. Khalsa named him man of the match.

Darlaston's own account was generous about him. They described the pace, movement and quality of the debutant as impressive and a delight to watch. It was also the fourth single-goal win for Khalsa over their local rivals in the last five league meetings. Darlaston's new manager Matty Lovatt, nine days into the job, praised Khalsa as 'a strong, well coached and well drilled side' and said he was happy with how training was going. He had lost central defender Joe Colley, injured on his debut a week earlier, and gave Jadel Mushanu a first game in his place. Earlier in the week Darlaston beat Warstones Wanderers Community 5-0, with Leon Bennett, a 17-year-old from the youth team, scoring his first senior goal.

Change of management was also the story at Tividale, who parted company with Jack Ball and appointed Andrew Thompson, Matt Clark and Arron Morris. Their first game ended in a 5-1 defeat at Brocton, which the new management team called a 'baptism of fire'. Brocton had gone out of the MFL Cup on penalties at Uttoxeter Town earlier in the week. It finished 1-1 after Jude King's 88th-minute equaliser, and Connor Haddaway hit the bar with the first spot-kick of the shoot-out that Uttoxeter won 5-4.

At Whitchurch Alport, goalkeeper Jack Sheward returned on dual registration from Newcastle Town and kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Uttoxeter. Dudley Town announced a one-month loan deal for Olly Trigg and Zeman Osawe.

At the top, Abbey Hulton United, third, faced leaders Winsford United and won 2-0, with the club acknowledging that an early red card was a major factor. Lye Town beat AFC Wolverhampton City 6-5, and Cheadle Town won 1-0 at Runcorn Town through a first-half goal from Tom Jones.
