Hungerford Town chairman says club is at the edge of a financial precipice

Hungerford Town chairman Cris Bowden has said the club is "now at the edge of a financial precipice", in a statement issued by the club on Thursday.

Bowden said he had seen "first-hand the significant financial challenges we have faced and continue to face every week". Despite the work of volunteers, the committee, and himself and Gemma, he said it remained "incredibly difficult" to make the progress needed. The club has been kept going, he said, but too much time and resource is spent "simply trying to stay afloat". He added: "Difficult, but necessary decisions will be needed to secure the immediate and long-term future of our football club."

Bowden described the club's current officials as "custodians of 140 years" of its history, with a duty to protect that legacy. He also pointed to the new independent football regulator, which he said has stated that English football finances are "dangerously exposed, with the majority of clubs living on the edge of financial disaster".

Supporters are invited to an open Q&A session in the Members' Bar after Saturday's game against Worcester Raiders, where Bowden said they could ask questions and hear directly from the club's leadership about the challenges. He also appealed to anyone in a position to offer financial support or sponsorship, "no matter how big or small", to contact him.
