Honiton's penalty drama headlines a week of cup football

A crowd of 556 packed into Honiton Town as the Hippos edged past a youthful Exeter City side on penalties in the Devon St Luke's Cup. Dyer's header, created when a corner cannoned off the Exeter goalkeeper, gave the home side the lead before Baker levelled for the visitors just before half-time. Neither side could find a winner in normal time, sending the tie to penalties, and it was Nicholls who held his nerve to seal a 5-3 shoot-out victory. The club later admitted that the decision to stage the shoot-out at the far end of the ground left much of the crowd unable to see the action, but that did little to dampen what it called a memorable night. Honiton now know they will face Willand Rovers in the next round, and followed the win with a 1-1 draw away at Ilfracombe Town, Jordan Jones equalising for the home side after Nickles' free kick.

Elsewhere in cup competition, Bishops Lydeard came through a Somerset FA Cup tie against Street on penalties, with three saves from Hollands proving decisive after the match had finished 1-1. Holsworthy progressed at the expense of Newton Abbot Spurs, winning on penalties after Chris Wildern's goal had made it 1-1, while Ilminster Town saw their cup week end in disappointment, losing to Bridgwater United in the Somerset Premier Cup after Sam Beresford and Doug Camilo struck in a four-minute spell midway through the first half. That defeat capped what the club described as a difficult week, following exits from the FA Vase and defeat to league leaders Elburton Villa, though the performance against Elburton was, by their own admission, their best of the season.

At the top of the Premier East table, high-flying Cullompton Rangers and Elburton Villa shared the points in a six-goal thriller. Cully led 3-1 at half-time only for Villa to fight back and level at 3-3, with Blake Colton later named Villa's player of the match. Cullompton Rangers' second team also picked up a win at Royal Oak, while the club's youth day at Adopstar Park is scheduled for 3 October.

At Helston Athletic, a minute's silence was held for former club volunteer and photographer Richard 'Dick' Swan ahead of a 2-2 draw with Mousehole, watched by 279 spectators, in which the Seagulls fought back from two goals down through Matt Stephens and Steffan Van Blerk.
