Floodlights and upheaval mark a big week in the Western League

For Nailsea United, this was a week to remember for reasons that had nothing to do with the scoreline. Their newly installed floodlights came on for the first time against Cadbury Heath, with the club describing it as "a huge moment" after years of work to reach the point where 234 people turned out to watch a 5-2 win. The momentum continued at Welton Rovers, where goals took Nailsea to a 4-0 victory and, in the club's words, back into the play-off spots ahead of a return trip to West Clewes.

That contrasted with news from Avonmouth, who announced that first-team manager Ash had stepped down with immediate effect following the club's last match. The board's statement thanked him for his contribution but offered little detail beyond confirming his departure, leaving the Saturday trip to Cadbury Heath as the next fixture for whoever takes charge.

Ground improvements featured elsewhere too. Odd Down confirmed that work would begin on 21 September to demolish the concrete perimeter walls at the Lew Hill Memorial Ground and replace them with metal fencing, funded in part by the Premier League Stadium Fund, a project expected to take around two weeks. The disruption forced fixture changes, with both first-team and Under-18 matches against Avonmouth, Tiverton Town and Hengrove Athletic rearranged.

On the pitch, Longwell Green Sports continued their progress in the FA Vase, drawn against St Blazey AFC in the first round proper after their 4-0 win over Thatcham Town. They also suffered a narrow league defeat to Bristol Telephones before returning to winning form against Shirehampton, for whom Ryan Radford and Ciaran Wall had earlier scored in a 3-1 win at Odd Down.

Elsewhere, Radstock Town maintained their good early-season form with a 5-1 win over Bitton, Joe Kemmery claiming a hat-trick, while AEK Boco bounced back from defeat with a 5-0 win at Keynsham Town before losing 4-0 to Bristol Telephones. Calne Town strengthened their squad with the returns of Gabe Costello and Natty Bell, while Bitton handed a debut to J. Hughes in their win over Welton Rovers and honoured Luke Osgood as player of the month.
