Fawley's stolen cables and the Wessex League clubs who keep the show going

The most telling story of the week in Wessex League Division One was not a result. Overnight before their home game against Cove, Fawley suffered the theft of several main power cables supplying the whole ground, leaving the football, cricket, bowls and tennis sections without electricity. The match was postponed, and the club thanked the Wessex League and Cove for their understanding.

In a later update the club confirmed the whole site was back up and running. Dave Katon carried out emergency repairs on Friday and Saturday, and R&M Electrical re-routed the supply, providing materials and labour free of charge. The fix is temporary. The club says the theft has added an unexpected cost to its planned new pavilion project, and it intends eventually to replace the cables and run them underground. Complete Security is installing a new CCTV system, and the club will work with its landlords, Exxon, on further security measures.

Not every disruption was so serious. Newport (IOW) postponed Tuesday's home game with New Milton Town, with a new date to be confirmed. New Milton's own report put the problem down to floodlighting. Newport had earlier celebrated a win in front of a 453 crowd, marked by a minute's applause for Daz Powell and Peter Ranger, and presented Jordan Browne with an award for 250 games for the club.

The postponement left New Milton with a week off at the top of the table. Their 4-1 win at Alresford Town came after Lloyd Thomas saved one penalty and failed to stop a second. Louis Whetton, Callum McHale, Jake Carswell and Noel McCarthy-Gardiner scored, and Carswell's 20-yard curler was later voted September's Goal of the Month. Colden Common are next to visit, having beaten Christchurch 1-0 in the Wessex League Cup through a Jack Nicholas header.

Midweek, Lymington Town beat Hamworthy United 4-3 at the Sports Ground, with Harrison Fay, Kian, Taylor and Coats scoring, and James Mayo named Man of the Match. Hamworthy's Ryan Knibbs was their September Hammer of the Month after two penalty saves, a clean sheet and a Man of the Match award.

Alresford, meanwhile, drew 0-0 at AFC Aldermaston despite playing the last half hour with ten men after a second yellow card for Jake Tanner. At Romsey Town, Jamie Arnold joined from Fareham Town on an initial one-month agreement before Romsey lost 3-1 to Ringwood Town. Hedge End Rangers beat Bemerton Heath Harlequins 3-0 in the League Cup, through Nathan Rogers and Sanchez McLean.
