FA Vase second qualifying round dominates SCEFL week

The FA Vase has taken hold of the Southern Counties East Football League this week, with fixtures across the division reshuffled or paused to make way for second qualifying round ties. Croydon travelled to face Lancing, having built up to the tie with a run of posts across the previous days, while Rochester United prepared to host Banstead Athletic at the Rochester Utilities Stadium after taking a break from league action following their 2-0 defeat to FC Elmstead. Manager Andy Pierce, speaking after that loss, described it as "a disappointing result given the number of chances created," noting that FC Elmstead, who started the day bottom of the table, "certainly didn't play like it."

Elsewhere in the competition, Sporting Club Thamesmead had their tie against Tooting & Mitcham Utd moved to a Friday night under the lights at Bayliss Avenue, while Staplehurst Monarchs United headed to Corinthian FC in Fawkham with a place in the next round at stake. Lydd Town, meanwhile, confirmed they had received a bye in the first qualifying round and will instead face East Grinstead in the second round at the Lindsey Field, with adult admission set at £8. Minster also had cup football on their minds, travelling to Kennington FC of the SCEFL Premier Division, a level above them, and marking the occasion by wearing a specially designed 1960s legends kit with the names of former players embossed into the fabric.

League business did continue in pockets. Bridon Ropes fell 3-2 at Halls despite goals from Theo Hayford and Mo Adisa, and were reduced to ten men after Ryan Crowder's dismissal in the 71st minute. Welling Town drew 1-1 with Tooting Bec, a game notable for Ryan Golding marking his 100th appearance for the club with a goal, described by the club as "a special moment" for their all-time top scorer. Croydon also drew, 1-1 with Sheppey Sports, remaining unbeaten, while Banstead Athletic shared the points 1-1 with Lydd Town in front of 78 spectators.

Away from results, Staplehurst Monarchs United opened their new 3G pitch, issuing facility rules covering footwear and pitch conduct ahead of its first use for training and matches, a small but tangible sign of infrastructure investment at this level as the cup competition takes centre stage.
