FA Vase progress and exits shape the week across NCEL clubs

For a division that spends most of its season fighting over league points, this was a week defined almost entirely by the FA Vase. Draws were made, ties were won and lost, and for a handful of clubs the competition offered something rarer than three points.

No one felt that more than Worsbrough Bridge Athletic. Having beaten Wakefield AFC 1-0 to reach the first round proper for the first time since 2001/02, the Briggers were rewarded with a home tie against fellow NCEL Premier Division side Retford FC on the weekend of 10 October. The cup run forces a league reshuffle, with Thackley Association confirming their scheduled meeting has been postponed.

Retford FC arrive at that tie in form after edging Uppermill 3-2, with manager Chris Woodhead celebrating the club's first-ever progression to the first round. Retford United, meanwhile, learned they will travel to Northwich Victoria, a fixture switched to a Sunday because of Northwich's groundshare with Runcorn Linnets. Barton Town also progress to the second round qualifying stage, while Pickering Town Community were handed an away tie against Holker Old Boys AFC and confirmed their scheduled league match at Campion on 10 October has been postponed as a consequence.

Not every club had cause for celebration. Campion were knocked out 3-0, prompting post-match reflections from joint manager Lee Ashforth. Simon Parkes' Knaresborough Town side also exited, losing 3-1 at home to Bishop Auckland, while Tadcaster Albion suffered a 4-0 defeat away at Carlisle City. Dearne & District also fell, losing 3-2 away at Brigg Town, and Golcar United were beaten 0-4 at home by Bottesford Town, who progress in convincing fashion with captain Scott Matthews marking the occasion by making his 50th appearance for the club.

Away from the cup, Rossington Main extended their unbeaten league run to six games with a 1-1 draw at Penistone Church, Oli Nowak scoring a 90th-minute equaliser after Penistone Church had led through Jack Cawthorn. Retford United produced the result of the week in the league proper, coming back from three goals down to beat Barton Town 4-3. Handsworth continue to look ahead to their own FA Vase test against northern league side Shildon AFC, drawn away for the weekend of 9-11 October.
