FA Trophy drama defines the week across the Northern Premier League

All Northern Premier League Premier Division sides featured in the FA Trophy third qualifying round this week, bringing late turnarounds and upsets across the board.

The weekend's standout tie came at Gigg Lane, where Bury needed penalties to see off Gainsborough Trinity after an extraordinary 3-3 draw. Trinity, trailing 3-1 deep into stoppage time, scored twice through Aaron Simpson and debutant Ronnie Kokkinos to force the shootout, only for Bury to prevail 6-5 from the spot. Kokkinos, signed from Sherwood Colliery on the morning of the game after injuries to Bobby Johnson and Jordan Helliwell, marked his debut with a crisp late equaliser before the shootout went against him. Goalscorer Aaron Simpson reflected on "some positives to take" from the comeback, while Bury's progress means a home tie against Prescot Cables awaits in the first round.

Elsewhere, results were split for the division's established clubs. Guiseley beat Bamber Bridge 4-2 after letting an early two-goal lead slip, with Ollie Brown, Amir Berchil, Cam Wilson and Kallan Murphy all on the scoresheet in a result that made it four goals in three successive matches for the first time in 46 years, a run then ended by a 1-0 defeat at Alfreton Town in league action. Curzon Ashton eased past Stalybridge Celtic 3-1 thanks to a Lawal goal and a Holmes brace, and Quorn came from behind to beat Leamington 4-2, with captain Mason Frizelle marking his 100th appearance with a tap-in following a Ryan Beswick penalty. Redcar Athletic won at Guisborough Town through a stoppage-time Owen Burns header, his second goal in as many games, and Workington edged Blyth Spartans in an open, end-to-end six-goal contest, Luke Hunter completing a remarkable sixty-yard solo goal deep into added time.

Not every side made it through. Whitby Town suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at Bridlington Town, Tom Allan scoring twice, while Avro, Leek Town and Alfreton Town progressed at the expense of Dunston UTS, Worcester City and Shifnal Town respectively. Emley, already toiling in the league having not won since August, were beaten by high-flying Bootle.

Off the pitch, the round was overshadowed by sad news. Guiseley led tributes to former defender Courtney Meppen-Walter, who died suddenly at 32; he had also played for Bury after a loan spell at Nethermoor. Guiseley confirmed the club wore black armbands in his memory, with a minute's silence to follow.

Administratively, the FA Trophy draw created a ripple of rearranged fixtures across the division, with games involving Curzon Ashton, Whitby Town and FC United of Manchester all shuffled to accommodate cup progress, as the autumn fixture list undergoes its usual cup reorganisation.
