FA Cup third qualifying round reshapes the Step 2 weekend

The third qualifying round swallowed the weekend whole at Step 2, and it reordered a good deal more than just the fixture list. For Spennymoor Town, it provided the perfect introduction to a new era: Peter Hartley's first match in charge ended in a 4-1 win over Chester at the Brewery Field, with Danny Johnson claiming a hat-trick and Glen Taylor marking his 450th appearance for the club with a goal. Hartley and assistant Ryan Cresswell could hardly have asked for more. Chester manager Neil was left reflecting on a third-round exit.

The most theatrical finish belonged to Harborough Town, who trailed St Albans City at the Beehive before Dempsey Arlott-John scored a hat-trick — left foot on 84 minutes, a header in the 98th, right foot in the 101st — to win it 3-2. It takes the Bees into the fourth qualifying round for a third successive season. Salisbury went further than they ever have since reformation in 2015, thrashing Dulwich Hamlet 5-0 to reach the fourth qualifying round for the first time in the club's modern history.

Elsewhere in the South, Dorking Wanderers beat Chatham Town 1-0 through a Harry Pinchard corner that bounced straight into the top corner — the second time in under a month he has scored directly from a set piece. Dover Athletic won 2-1 at Hanwell Town in front of a record Hanwell crowd of 1,057, Decarrey Sheriff settling it with fifteen minutes left, while Torquay United again proved an unwelcome visitor to Longmead, winning 1-0 at Tonbridge Angels through Matt Worthington. Alan Dunne, whose side dominated the first half, called it "like a broken record". Chesham United won a seven-goal tie 4-3 against Real Bedford, Oxford City beat Enfield Town, and Chelmsford City won 2-0 at Brackley Town. Ebbsfleet United and Horsham both exited to Step 3 opposition.

In the North, Morecambe saw off Darlington 3-0, Chorley won 4-1 at Barton Town with a Max Hunt brace, Marine beat Warrington Town 2-0 and South Shields won at Buxton. Worksop Town lost 3-0 at home to FC United of Manchester. Macclesfield needed two late Paul Dawson strikes to force a replay with Scarborough Athletic, which takes place on Tuesday; Spalding United likewise drew 1-1 at Bury Town and host the replay.

Away from the cup, Radcliffe appointed Grant Shenton as manager on a two-year deal, Southport confirmed Mark Duffy permanently, and Farnham Town lost Owen Dean to Yeovil Town for an undisclosed fee after 214 appearances and 91 goals.
