FA Cup runs light up the Northern Premier League week

FA Cup ties took priority across the Northern Premier League Premier Division this week, bringing progress for several clubs alongside ugly scenes off the pitch at Gigg Lane. Bury beat Workington 5-0 in their second qualifying round tie, but the club later issued a statement condemning racist abuse directed at one of their players during the match, saying "there is no place for racism in football" and pledging continued support for the player affected. Workington responded with a statement standing alongside Bury and confirming they were investigating other unacceptable behaviour witnessed at Gigg Lane, while separately announcing that defender Matty Douglas had dislocated his elbow and broken his arm in the game and faces surgery followed by a lengthy recovery.

Guiseley produced one of the round's standout scorelines, winning 4-1 away at National League North side Hebburn Town through Kallan Murphy, Jack Tinker, Cam Wilson and Amir Berchil ahead of their FA Trophy meeting with Bamber Bridge. FC United of Manchester also progressed with a 4-1 win over Ossett United, goals coming from Buckley, Palinkas, Atkinson and Devine, with Aaron Atkinson named man of the match. The Reds will now face either Telford United or Worksop Town in the third qualifying round, and confirmed the signing of defender Charlie Finney from Crewe Alexandra.

Gainsborough Trinity needed two attempts to see off Leamington, drawing 1-1 through Connor Brown before winning the replay 3-0 with a Fraser Preston goal rounding things off, sending Russ Wilcox's side into a home tie with The Nomads. The result came in the week Wilcox marked three years, and 150 games, in charge at the Kal Group Stadium. Warrington Town also went through, beating South Liverpool 3-0 courtesy of goals from Reece Daly, Callum Edwards and Jack Goodwin, sending them into third round qualifying for the first time in seven years, and they now turn to the FA Trophy against Ashton United.

Several NPL sides bowed out of the competition. Quorn exited 2-0 away at fellow Step Three side Kettering Town, despite goalkeeper Jake Laban saving a penalty, and manager Ryan Beswick admitted "everyone was flat today." Before the game, Quorn had announced the signing of forward Terell Pennant from Harborough Town. Redcar Athletic also fell at home, losing 2-1 to Macclesfield despite a spirited second-half fightback including a Louis Johnson penalty, ending their long unbeaten home run at Green Lane in cup terms, though the club noted they remain unbeaten there in the league for a full year. Emley suffered a heavier defeat, going down 4-0 at home to National League North side Spennymoor Town, a second consecutive scoreline of that margin, with manager Richard Tracey booked for protesting a late penalty appeal that was waved away.

Away from the cup, Cleethorpes Town manager Craig Rouse signed a new contract after guiding the club to the top of the table, while Hyde United confirmed the return of former captain Brad Roscoe from Radcliffe. Workington also announced the signing of forward Louis Jacobs, while paying tribute to former director Colin Doorbar, who died aged 82 after decades of service to the club.
