Cup runs and comebacks define a hectic Southern League week
For a division not directly involved in this weekend's headline draws, the Southern League's clubs spent the week thoroughly entangled in the FA Cup, and the competition brought the usual run of upsets, replays and shocks.

The standout story belonged to Malvern Town, who beat Gloucester City 5-2 to record their first-ever Step 3 victory, Harry Clark, an own goal, Joe Bullock, Luke Payne and Matt Fulloway all struck at the HDA Community Stadium before a crowd of 609. It capped a week in which Gloucester's cup form - a 2-0 FA Cup win at AFC Totton, with both goals from Joe Hanks - had offered promise that league form has yet to match.
Wimborne Town provided the week's longest-running cup saga. A 1-1 draw at National League South side Weston-super-Mare, Will Fletcher cancelling out Luke Skinner's opener, forced a replay at the Wyatt Homes Stadium that finished level after extra time before the Magpies won 4-3 on penalties, Kai Crampton saving the decisive spot-kick. Manager Tim Sills had called the tie "a free hit" beforehand; instead it set up a Third Round Qualifying trip to Crowborough Athletic.

Elsewhere, replays shaped the weekend for several clubs. Chippenham Town needed a replay to see off Yate Town after a goalless draw, while Needham Market were eventually eliminated 3-0 at Braintree Town following a 3-3 draw at Bloomfields, where Jake Dye's stoppage-time header had earned the second game. Leiston edged past Hitchin Town when substitute Eddie Jackson headed home a 92nd-minute winner after Blue Joy's late equaliser had appeared to force a replay of their own.
Among the sides to progress comfortably, Bromsgrove Sporting beat Leek Town 2-1 in the FA Cup before following up with a 3-2 league win at Stratford Town, Ollie Harrison scoring twice to make it seven wins in a row for Tim Flowers's side. Halesowen Town beat Mickleover 2-0, Jason Cowley scoring both, to reach the Third Qualifying Round for a second successive season, while Redditch United knocked out Evesham United 3-0 to reach that stage for the first time in fifteen years.

Not every cup night went to plan. Peterborough Sports sacked manager Graham Drury following their exit at AFC Rushden & Diamonds, though the club responded with a 2-0 league win over Leiston through Finn O'Boyle and Leon Lobjoit. Off the pitch, Redditch United used their platform to raise serious concerns about antisocial behaviour and ground infrastructure following trouble at their fixture with Halesowen, calling for wider support from the Football Association and Football Foundation.
With the Third Qualifying Round drawn, the division moves straight into a split programme of FA Trophy ties and cup replays.
