Cray Wanderers stun Maidstone United to reach FA Cup third round qualifying

Fifty years almost to the day since their famous FA Cup giant-killing at Oxford Road, Cray Wanderers produced another remarkable result against Maidstone United, winning 2-0 in the second qualifying round replay at the Gallagher Stadium. Ola Ogunwamide's 22nd-minute curler and a stoppage-time finish from Ade Yusuff sent the Wands through, after Rob Strachan's late equaliser had earned a 1-1 draw in the first meeting at Flamingo Park. The club described it as one of the greatest results in their history, and it sets up a first-ever meeting with Chippenham Town in the third qualifying round on 3 October.

Cup exploits aside, Cray also shared the points in a 3-3 Isthmian Premier draw with St Albans City, Seidou Sanogo heading a stoppage-time equaliser after the Wands had twice trailed.

Dulwich Hamlet set up a trip to National League South side Salisbury FC with a 4-0 derby win over Welling United at Champion Hill, watched by more than 2,300. Ogo Obi scored a hat-trick, leaving Welling boss Ryan Maxwell to reflect on a disappointing afternoon. Dartford booked a visit to Tadley Calleva after overturning a deficit to beat Hayes & Yeading United 4-2 at Princes Park, Jordan Higgs netting a 30-yard half-volley and Max Fiddes scoring twice, while Jack Lyons struck the decisive goal as Chatham Town edged past Slough Town to earn a tie against Southall or Dorking Wanderers.

Leatherhead needed a mass brawl and three red cards to see off Kingstonian 1-0 in a tie their own match report described as chaotic from the officials down, Bobby Price scoring the only goal. In the league, they twice came from behind to draw 3-3 at Three Bridges, debutant loan signing Tom Dryer scoring twice after arriving from Woking only hours before kick-off. At Maldon Stadium, Carshalton Athletic recovered from 2-0 down inside five minutes to beat Maldon & Tiptree 3-2, debutant Will Bratvedt scoring twice including an 87th-minute winner, a comeback manager Steven Bates said reflected excellent spirit among his players.

At Theobalds Lane, Cheshunt recorded a first win of the season, beating Lewes 3-1 despite goalkeeper R'avan Constable being called into repeated action early on, with Raul Da Silva, Tommy Wood and Sam Granville among the scorers. Lewes had earlier beaten Carshalton Athletic 3-0 at The Dripping Pan through Charlie Walker, Ryan Gondoh and new signing Harry Mills.

Away from results, Aveley confirmed Alex Akrofi as their new first-team manager following Brett Munyard's departure to join Brentwood Town, a switch chairman Craig Johnson said came at the worst possible time ahead of an FA Cup tie with his new club. Brentwood Town duly beat Aveley in that tie, while St Albans City confirmed the departure of Charlie Edwards, who has rejoined Brentwood Town.
