Bromsgrove win a sixth in a row to set up Bury trip

No club captured the mood of Step 3 better this week than Bromsgrove Sporting, who beat Leek Town 2-1 in the FA Cup to make it six wins in a row, Lamin Barrow and Jamille Matt supplying the goals despite Matt missing a penalty earlier in the game. Manager Tim Flowers praised his side's fluency after the win over Bury Town the previous weekend, and the Rouslers now face a daunting third qualifying round trip to Bury, themselves flying after an 8-0 demolition of Wythenshawe followed by a comfortable win over Workington.

That Workington tie was overshadowed by an ugly postscript. Bury condemned racist abuse directed at one of their players during the match, a stance immediately echoed by Workington, who said they were investigating incidents from the same afternoon and invited supporters to come forward with information. It was a reminder that non-league grounds are not immune from the game's uglier undercurrents, even in the supposedly innocent romance of an FA Cup Saturday.

A spate of drawn ties means a congested midweek schedule. Chippenham Town and Yate Town could not be separated in a goalless draw, sending the tie to a Tuesday night replay in Wiltshire, while a 1-1 draw between Cray Wanderers and Maidstone United, earned by Rob Strachan's 83rd-minute equaliser, also went to a second match at Maidstone. Wimborne Town needed a Will Fletcher equaliser to force a replay against National League South's Weston-super-Mare, and Gainsborough Trinity came from behind through Connor Brown to earn another go at Leamington, the tie eventually heading to a Tuesday night replay at the Northolme.

Not every tie needed a second bite. Guiseley were ruthless at Hebburn Town, four different scorers - Kallan Murphy, Jack Tinker, Cam Wilson and Amir Berchil - putting a National League North side to the sword in a 4-1 win. Halesowen Town beat Mickleover 2-0 through a Jason Cowley brace to reach the third qualifying round for a second successive season, while Redditch United thrashed local rivals Evesham United 3-0, Szhem Whyte-Hall, Alex Foreshaw and Danny King on target to send the Reds into round three for the first time in 15 years - they now host Berkhamsted, themselves 4-1 winners over Hendon.

In south London, Dulwich Hamlet swept past local rivals Welling United 4-1 in front of more than 2,300 at Champion Hill, preserving an unbeaten home record built on previous victories against Brentwood Town and Maldon & Tiptree. Basingstoke Town could not be separated from Gosport Borough in a 1-1 draw, Jeremiah Okine-Peters heading a late leveller after Jerry Wiltshire's early opener, while further along the south coast Chatham Town edged past Slough Town thanks to Jack Lyons.

Heartbreak arrived late for Hitchin Town, who fought back against Leiston only to concede a 92nd-minute header from substitute Eddie Jackson after Blue Joy's equaliser had looked set to force a replay. Leiston's reward is a home tie against Coventry United, while upcoming league opponents Peterborough Sports exited the competition 3-1 at AFC Rushden & Diamonds despite Lewis Green's goal on the stroke of half-time. Bath City, meanwhile, had their scheduled trip to Hanwell Town postponed after the Geordies' own cup progress scrambled the league fixture list.

Away from the cup, Redcar Athletic's remarkable unbeaten home run - now stretching a full year at Green Lane - continued to underpin an excellent start in the Northern Premier League, though their FA Cup exit to Macclesfield was a reminder of the gulf in class a division higher up the pyramid can bring. For clubs across Step 3, though, the story of the week was less about league position and more about how far the cup dream might yet carry them into October.
