Brightlingsea Regent's errors and red cards define Isthmian week

Brightlingsea Regent have endured a week of costly lapses and wretched luck in the Isthmian League. Manager Ryan Salter was left reflecting on a 1-2 defeat to Bowers & Pitsea in which, by his own count, six of their ten league games have been lost through errors rather than opposition quality. "I can't cut out errors, it is a decision-making thing, it is a mentality thing that we have to change," Salter said, praising new arrivals David Ogbechie and Daniel Falako. That followed a genuinely extraordinary midweek trip to Newmarket Town, where Regent lost 2-1 in a game that produced four red cards, including three of their own players, Harry McDonald, Danny Rowe, and Tom Cottle-Wood, whose dismissal was later overturned on appeal. A 1-1 draw with AFC Sudbury this week offered some respite, with club legend Charlie Turner marking his return.

Officiating controversies were not confined to Newmarket. At Grays Athletic, Blues felt a "right royal sense of injustice" after a 1-0 defeat at Bowers & Pitsea in which a linesman failed to flag what the club described as a series of clear offsides before the only goal, while Tyler Brampton's second-yellow red card compounded their misery.

In the FA Trophy, Faversham Town beat Stanway Rovers 2-0 away thanks to goals from Jack Parter and Eniye Amgbaduba, sending the Lilywhites through to the first round for only the second time in the club's history, where they will meet Newmarket Town. Manager Steve Watt had been smarting after Faversham's first league defeat of the season, 3-2 at home to Whitstable Town, a result built on goals from Mason Hunter and Sebastian Amatai either side of a Tommie Fagg penalty rebound. Deal Town progressed on penalties, beating Ashford United 6-5 after a goalless draw, with goalkeeper Joe Coleman arriving from Herne Bay soon after.

At the top of the South Central table, AFC Portchester's unbeaten start was tested at leaders Bognor Regis Town, the two having already drawn 0-0 earlier in the season, with seven points separating them going into the match. Jersey Bulls, Hendon, Kingstonian and Southall were the other unbeaten sides heading into the weekend's fixtures.

In the North Division, Walthamstow's extraordinary 9-0 win over Lowestoft Town, featuring hat-tricks from Joden Trickett and James Collins, marked a dramatic shift in form for a side struggling prior to Tuesday's 2-1 win over leaders Hashtag United.
