There is a particular kind of honesty that non-league management demands, and this week it came pouring out of Lee Attenborough at Belper Town. After a share of the spoils at Long Eaton United followed a home defeat to Rugby Borough, the manager did not reach for easy comfort. "None of us are here to be mid-table," he said, before conceding: "I think I've come to that reality." It was a rare piece of public self-diagnosis, delivered after what he called their poorest performance of the season against Rugby Borough was followed four days later by his side leading at Long Eaton only to concede an 88th-minute equaliser.
At the other end of the emotional scale, Ashington manager Marc Ellison found a different kind of honesty after his side's 1-1 draw at league leaders Liversedge. Despite conceding a late equaliser, Ellison admitted he was disappointed not to have won, adding: "A few weeks ago I was really questioning the players and the performances we were putting in... now we're building performances every single week." That draw came off the back of Ashington's first league win of the season, a 2-1 victory over Garforth Town in which substitute Dan Groves, returning from a year out injured, and full-back Bryan Taylor both made telling contributions.
In the FA Cup, Atherton Collieries beat fellow NPL side Prescot Cables 2-0 to reach the third qualifying round for the first time in their history —progressing through four qualifying rounds for the first time—with a late penalty save from goalkeeper Jack Dallimore sealing celebrations that saw manager Danny Lafferty interviewed on BBC Radio 5 Live. Stafford Rangers, meanwhile, mounted a stirring fightback against Hereford to win 3-2 in front of 3,004 supporters — their biggest home gate since an FA Cup meeting with Burnley in 1990.
