Ashington came from behind to defeat Beverley Town in stormy conditions at Woodhorn Lane. Goals from Josh Gilchrist, Ryan Wombwell and Liam Henderson cancelled out Cameron Connelly’s opener.
During a strong start from the away side, Connelly prodded home at close range from a set piece. Shortly after, a flowing move from defence to attack found Josh Gilchrist who finished confidently, Ryan Wombwell put Ashington infront before the interval after rising highest at the back-post from an inswinging free kick.
Early in the second half, Liam Henderson wrapped up the points after pouncing on a short back-pass and slotting home. Beverley had more control in the second half but couldn’t reduce the deficit.
Dean Briggs impressed on his second Ashington debut, providing a sublime assist for Gilchrist’s equaliser, and Paddy Almond was a rock at the back for the home side as they achieved maximum points for only the third time this season.
Victory for Ashington relieves some pressure off under-scrutiny boss Marc Ellison and condemns Beverley to a fifth straight league defeat. The Colliers now move one point above The Beavers into 19th place, although Beverley Town have a game in hand.
