Ampthill Town top Spartan South Midlands table with 8-2 win and free-entry gesture

Ampthill Town moved back to the top of the league and extended their unbeaten run to 13 games with a 3-2 home win, sealed by a late Phil Draycott free kick following earlier goals from Freddie Knight and Shea Greene. Their next home game was a free-entry league match, offered as a thank-you for support over the previous two home games, and it ended 8-2 at the Anco Stadium. Knight and Danio Brown each scored a hat-trick, with Sam Holmes and Joe Hankins, from the penalty spot, completing the scoring.

The club also named goalkeeper Mitchell Howe as its Amplius Player of the Month for September 2026. He kept four clean sheets, counting cup games over 90 minutes, and saved four penalties across two shoot-out wins. Nineteen-year-old striker Shea Greene took man-of-the-match awards at Stotfold and at home to Langford, and the club said it was good to see him playing with confidence.

Buckingham suffered a midweek thrashing, losing 6-0 at Woodford United. The club's own verdict was blunt: "Not our finest", adding that Woodford "got us by the throat and never let go". The week before they had drawn 3-3 at Rothwell Corinthians, with a late penalty appeal waved away, and Louie Howarth was named the club's Player of the Month. A club post said he sits top of the League 1 goalscoring charts.

At Irchester United, goalkeeper Mitch Wilkinson saved all three of Netherton's penalties in a cup shoot-out, which the club said took him to seven saves from nine this season. Davide Soro and Dylan McGinley scored in a derby win over Rushden & Higham United, and the Romans then prepared to host Sutton United in the FA Vase. The club also marked Ethan Dann, 21, playing for the first time in two years and three months after an ACL and meniscus injury.

Letchworth Garden City Eagles edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3 against Huntingdon Town, who recovered from 3-0 down to level at 3-3 and rattled the crossbar before a late Letchworth free kick settled the contest. New Bradwell St Peter won 6-0 at Stotfold Development, with Luke Burrows, Beckett Mountford-Hill, Jake Stubbs, Jack Dowse and Liam Clarke among those named, and Cranfield United beat Stotfold Reserves 2-0 with two goals from M. Smith. Rushden & Higham United drew 0-0 with Crawley Green before losing on penalties.
