It was a bleak Spartan South Midlands League week for Cranfield United, who continue to struggle for points. Beaten 1-0 at home by Wellingborough Whitworth, whom the club said had come with a game plan and got the job done, Cranfield United then lost 2-1 at table-topping Eaton Socon, undone by a late penalty. It was a third successive league defeat. Before the trip, the club had spoken of wanting to "right their wrongs" after two consecutive 1-0 losses. Next comes a visit to Badgers, described by the club as having made a good start.
There was far more cheer for Ampthill Town. The club reported a 3-0 home win over Rushden & Higham United in front of 230, with headed goals from Jake Kissiedu, Mikey Draycott and captain Phil Draycott. Mikey Draycott took the man of the match award. The Amps followed that up with a 1-0 victory, and next host Langford on 3 October at 3pm.
At Irchester United, goalkeeper Mitch Wilkinson saved another penalty and kept another clean sheet against Woodford United on Tuesday, even though the hosts played with ten men for more than 85 minutes after a central midfielder was sent off. Irchester named 'The General' as man of the match for covering extra ground in midfield. Their previous Saturday brought a 3-2 defeat to Badgers.
New Bradwell St Peter beat Langford 2-0 under the lights, Alfie Gaspar and Luke Burrows scoring, after sharing a 3-3 draw at Rothwell in which they led 2-0 at the break. Elsewhere, Letchworth Garden City Eagles won 3-1 against Bishops Stortford Swifts, with goals from Max, Loz and Ryan, and signed JC from Baldock Town. Rushden & Higham United beat Burton Park Wanderers 2-0, and Austin Bishop is one appearance short of 200 for the club.
